I am a big fan of trying to do things myself, either to save money or to learn a new trade (and yes, I make attempts to be a master of all things I try too). I have also been a big fan of “cowboy culture” since fourth grade. It has always been an interest of mine. Since I began country dancing a few years back, I’ve been fascinated by the craftsmanship and attention to detail. From the starching of jeans to the shaping of felt and straw hats to be fully custom to one’s look and personality. I’ve found myself down a rabbit hole of seeing Mexican styles of hats being shaped and found myself really appreciating the artistry and style of it. The hat seen is nothing much but a fun 3X hat from Ariat I bought to be a beater hat, something to get wet in the rain and use resourcefully. (Hats are expensive for more Xs.) And I have taken the liberty of shaping it myself the best i can with the tool i have. a kettle for steam and a shoe lace to keep the kettle lid open for the steam to flow smoothly onto the felt. The silhouette below mirrors the shapes I’ve seen among the styles with my own take at it. Although I’ve never had anyone hands-on teach me this art, it’s been a journey of trial, error, and a lot of passion for the craft that has helped me develop my skills. Looking to the future of this endeavor, I plan to get a straw hat for the upcoming summer months to protect from the heat, with my own custom shape that is hopefully similar to the last, complete with the same unique accessories. (ie. Toothpicks, feathers etc.)
